Autonomous Agile Aerial Robots

Quadrotors flying in formation

I’ve seen different video clips from this talk but, standing alone, they were missing the context of the talk.  A friend finally sent me the link to the  TED presentation by Vijay Kumar. Vinjay is currently the Deputy Dean for Education in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania  From 1998 to 2004 he headed the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab at the University of Pennsylvania that produced this amazing work.

So to keep things in context with the Microsoft robotics contest (and I’m not encouraging you to fast forward through the 16 minute video) starting at about 12:00 they show one of their heavy lifters with a Hokuyo laser scanner and a Microsoft Kinect.  This is a great time to be in the robotics field.

Kinect mounted on a rotor.
